Song analysis

In my training as a sound engineer, an important component is song analysis. Specifically, a song is chosen and analyzed in detail. How is the instrumentation, the arrangement? How was the melody chosen, where do background voices come in and what do they do? How was what mixed, integrated in the frequency spectrum? What effects were chosen and used? Where does the song become broad, where intimate?

So you sit with headphones in front of a blank sheet of paper and write down everything you hear. Individual elements only become visible in this way that would otherwise be overheard and bring the producer/musician further in his activity. Much of it can be used in your own productions and thus improve the workflow and the final product.

This time I was in the mood for the world hit «Shape Of You» by Ed Sheeran. And when I heard the intro I had the desire to recreate this song with other instruments. So my simple song analysis became a studio project which I documented with the camera.

The result was satisfying, so my voice was too little to do the song. My wife Marina had time and desire and sang the very difficult and fast passages. As a result we had this video that I do not want to withhold from you.
